Le festival Aoi est un important festival de Kyôto. Il se déroule chaque année le 15 mai et a lieu aux sanctuaires shintô Kamigamo et Shimogamo, au nord de la ville. Ce festival consiste en une procession en costumes d'époque Heian. Le nom d'Aoi provient de la tradition d'offrir des géraniums (aoi) aux dieux/esprits. Durant une journée, on décore les temples, les participants et les chariots de bœuf avec des feuilles de géranium... L'origine du festival remonte à la période de l'empereur Kimmei (il y a approximativement 1400 ans). Les récoltes ne donnaient pas satisfaction, et cela fut vécu comme une malédiction de "l'esprit Kamo". Un cheval fut équipé pour courir avec des cloches, et les moissons purent être abondantes.
